The Paintings

The Gray Brewer Highwaymen Collection is comprised of a number of original paintings by a group of African-American artists from Florida known as the Highwaymen.  Starting in the 1950s, Gray Brewer began purchasing the paintings directly from Highwaymen artists, and they remained in his possession until his passing in 2008, at which time they were inherited by his two sons, Bryan and Gray Jr., who are now offering the collection for sale.

Many of the paintings were painted by Harold Newton, with whom Gray Brewer had a lifelong friendship.  Other Highwaymen artists represented in the collection include Alfred Hair, James Gibson, Livingston Roberts, Roy McLendon, and Sam Newton.

The collection represents a broad range of Highwaymen landscape themes, including seascapes, palm trees, sunsets, lagoon docks, sailboats, poinciana trees, and street scenes, to name a few. They range in size from small 10" X 8" pieces, all the way up to large ones measuring 24" X 48".

Many of the paintings are painted on Upson board, signed by the artist, and have their original frames.
